Perched atop a verdant hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley, Swoyambhu Mahachaitya, affectionately known as the Monkey Temple, is a captivating Buddhist stupa and pilgrimage site. Reachable in approximately 13 to 14 minutes by car (around 2.8-3.4 kilometers) from the Grand Yak Boutique Hotel, the ascent to the main stupa is often adorned with colorful prayer flags, leading to an atmosphere of spiritual tranquility. The magnificent whitewashed dome with its gilded spire, famously adorned with the “all-seeing eyes of Buddha” gazing in all four cardinal directions, is a powerful symbol of wisdom and compassion. The complex also hosts numerous shrines, temples, and a lively population of resident monkeys, adding to its unique charm. Visitors can spin prayer wheels, light butter lamps, and enjoy unparalleled panoramic views of Kathmandu, especially breathtaking at sunrise or sunset.
